Social Policy Research and Studies Sector
The Social Policy Study Cluster (SPSC) at the FDRE Policy Studies Institute (PSI) broadly focuses on conducting policy relevant studies on issues of poverty, social welfare, human development, labour market, and gender issues. The cluster has three policy studies centres namely Poverty and Social Welfare Policy Studies Centre, Human Development and Labour Studies Centre, and Gender, Women and Youth Policy studies Centre.
The core functions of the SPSC include
- Conduct academic and policy relevant studies on issues of poverty, social welfare; human development (such as education, health, and nutrition), labour market; and gender;
- Conduct impact evaluation on social policy programs and interventions;
- Generate and mobilize research fund;
- Create forum for social policy dialogues;
- Collaborate with national and international research and academic institutions;
- Forge strong partnership with government ministries and agencies;
- Contribute to national capacity building in the area of policy formulation and implementation.
- Communicate and disseminate outputs through round table meetings, workshops, seminars and conferences.

Widespread poverty and inequality are the core development problems in Ethiopia. The Poverty and Social Welfare Policy Study Centre aims to contribute to addressing these development problems by conducting research and policy analysis that generate policy, strategies and institutional measures towards sustainably eradicating poverty and attaining low inequality in Ethiopia.

- Measure and understand the extent and magnitude of poverty and inequality in Ethiopia
- Identify the challenges facing the poor to access opportunities and benefit from economic growth and/or poverty-oriented programs/interventions;
- Identify vulnerable groups of the society, the nature and causes of vulnerability;
- Identify policies, strategies and/or interventions to reduce the magnitude and extent of poverty and inequality and sustainably build the resilience of vulnerable groups of society;
- Conduct research and policy analysis
- Conduct impact evaluation on poverty oriented programs
- Generate/mobilize research fund
- Create forum for dialogues
- Collaborate and work with partners of similar national and international institutions
- Contribute to national capacity building in the area of policy - formulation and - making
- Produce policy briefs, research reports, working papers and journal articles

Women, Children and Youth Policy Studies Centre is one of the centres of Social Policy Studies Cluster at the FDRE Policy Studies Institute (PSI). The centre widely focuses on conducting policy-relevant studies pertaining women, children and youth in Ethiopia and thereby add to their well-being as well as the success of national development endeavours. Among the focal areas of studies in the centre are gender equality; gender mainstreaming; gender statistics; education; health; well-being; empowerment and participation of women, youth and children in all development sectors.

- Conducting impact evaluation of programs and interventions pertinent to women, children and youth;
- Conducting review and evaluation of national policies and strategies;
- Generating and mobilizing research funds;

- Forging a strong partnership with government ministries and agencies as well as like-minded non-governmental organizations;
- Contributing to national capacity building in the area of policy formulation, implementation and evaluation;
- Communicating and disseminating outputs through roundtable meetings, workshops, conferences, seminars and publications.
